The lecture course is devoted to one of the most interesting and actively developing chapters in condensed matter physics, namely, the theory of topological insulators. We have chosen this topic for our lecture course since because, apart from its significance for the theoretical physics, we were attracted by its relations with various mathematical directions. Among them are topology and Clifford algebra theory, K-theory and noncommutative geometry. Topological insulators are characterized by having the energy gap stable with respect to small deformations which is a motivation for the employment of topological methods. A key role is played by the investigation of their symmetry groups that allowed Kitaev to propose a classification of topological insulators. We shall speak in detail about these and other aspects of the theory of topological insulators in our lecture course.
