Walking with Euler by the knight’s move on boards

J. Sesiano

Abstract: The publication of Euler’s article took place in 1766. But our knowledge of his works on the knight’s move has increased recently, with the publication of his previous researches, preserved in manuscript form in Archive of the Petersburg Academy of Science. They appear not to contain any theory, but merely attempts of constructions. Indeed, facing a problem new to him, and he did not know any previous study, Euler first chose to limit himself to constructing a large number of individual examples, initially for the common chessboard, then for boards of various sizes and forms. His article appears to be a synthesis and extensions of part of these attempts.
