On solutions of the Painlevé equations and their hierarchies

We show that all local holomorphic solutions of the first, second and fourth Painlevé equations and some of their hierarchies are globally meromorphic functions of a special form. (Joint work with Bulat Suleimanov and Mikhail Shumkin.) We also discuss the related generalizations and open problems.
