Elena S. Wentzel. Between Mathematics and Literature

G. L. Epstein

Abstract: The report presents new data on the history of the family of Elena Sergeevna Wentzel (1907 - 2002), as well as the main stages and events of her life. The features of Elena Sergeevna's approach to mathematical texts are considered, which ensured the extraordinary popularity of the textbook "Theory of Probability", the monograph "Research of Operations" and a number of other books that are reprinted to this day. Her views on the problems of higher education are presented. Since Elena Sergeevna Wentzel has been publishing short stories and novels under the pseudonym I. Grekova since 1962, attention is paid to her literary activities and publications on philological, literary and social issues. On the example of E. S. Wentzel and other authors, some considerations are given on the relationship between creative processes in mathematics and in literature.
