Abstract:
A talk about the life and work of the outstanding Russian mathematician and organizer of science Vladimir Andreevich Steklov (1864–1926).
We will discuss Steklov pedigree, the Nizhny Novgorod period of his life, his studies at Moscow and Kharkov universities. Then we will talk about Steklov activities at St. Petersburg: in university and at Academy of Sciences; about Steklov participation in the reorganization of the Academy of Sciences and about the creation of the Physics and Mathematics Institute at the Academy, the progenitor of the modern Steklov Mathematical Institute RAS.
