Some Characteristic Features of the Lives of Higher Mathematics Teachers in Nizhny Novgorod. Pre-Revolutionary Period

Abstract: Our talk presents information about higher mathematics teachers at several educational institutions in Nizhny Novgorod. The focus is on the daily lives of the city's intelligentsia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Using the case studies of five teachers ‒ Vasily Vasilyevich Adrianov (1857–1940), Evgeny Lvovich Korinfsky (1858–1917), Vsevolod Vasilyevich Malinin (1835–1906), Vladimir Vasilyevich Tatarinov (1879–1941), and Ilya Nikolaevich Ulyanov (1831–1886) ‒ we will explore the widespread phenomenon of combining jobs, i.e., serving simultaneously at several educational institutions. A characteristic feature of that time, living in company or rented apartments, is also noted. A characteristic feature of that time, living in service or rented apartments, is also noted. In addition, material is presented on the emergence of numerous public organizations, associations, and clubs in Nizhny Novgorod dedicated to the dissemination of scientific knowledge among citizens, and the active role played by mathematics teachers at educational institutions in this provincial city. The most detailed examination is of the activities of the Nizhny Novgorod Circle of Physics and Astronomy Lovers, of which four of the five teachers mentioned were active members.
