Abstract: We consider the problems of developing hybrid wireless systems based on laser and radio technologies. We present a new method for estimating the characteristics of such systems operating in a random semi-Markov environment. The method is based on the theory of Markov modulated processes. We develop an efficient algorithm for computing the stationary probability distribution of the states and performance characteristics for hybrid systems. A numerical example illustrates the proposed approach.

Keywords: hybrid wireless system, performance and reliability, Markov modulated processes, semi-Markov process, birth-and-death process.
