Comparison of interval numbers and optimization of interval-parameter systems

Abstract: Numbers defined by intervals are investigated in connection with optimization of interval-parameter systems. The solution of this problem is based on the concept of a measure of proximity for intervals and this concept is extended to arbitrarily located intervals. If covering of an interval by another is forbidden, the solution is transformed into the well-known solution, i.e., the right-shifted interval is the larger of the two. In the general case, the solution is reduced to comparing the centers of intervals.
