Using local estimates in solving variational problems bu limited search

A way to reduce the search in solving the variational problem is described. A principle is proposed whereby assurely non-optimal paths are identified from the specified set of incomplete admissible paths through the use of local functional estimates. Conditions are determined under which rejection of some interim solutions does not reduce the accuracy of the final result. An examle is given of using local estimates im numerical solution of the dynamic optimization problem.
