Optimal delay control. I

Abstract: In optimal control of dynamic processes described by differential equations with a delayed argument the delays act as control signals. The necessary conditions for optimality of control signals are obtained as the maximum principle. A theorem on existence of optimal control is proved. In the class of lumped delays the optimal motion is shown to be generally obtained by sliding modes.
