Dynamic programming in problems with a qualitative criterion estimate

The paper is concerned with a class of optimal control problems with a qualitative criterion estimate. Dynamic programming is shown to be applicable to solution of discrete problems in this class. A functional equation is derived for the case of a qualitative criterion estimate and a solution algorithm is developed. Effectiveness of the computing procedure is analyzed. For illustration a hardware replacement problem is discussed with a quantitative estimate of costs.
