On the method of piecewise-smooth penalty functions

A mathematical programming problem is solved with the use of the method of piecewise-smooth penalty functions. Existence conditions for the penalty function are given and convergence of gradient minimization procedures is studied. A number of ways to obtain a piecewise-smooth penalty function is described.
