Abstract: Analytical and numerical methods are used to solve the problem of size reduction of a solid reactant in a reactive gas as applied to problems of synthesis in solid–gas systems and safe grinding of powders. Formulas are obtained that describe the dynamics of temperature, the degree of conversion, particle size, and specific interfacial area. The conditions of explosive and nonexplosive syntheses and safe grinding are determined.

Keywords: grinding, chemical reaction, thermal explosion, synthesis.
