Explosive fragmentation of materials

Abstract: The process of high-rate fragmentation of materials is considered. On the basis of an energy approach the fracture mechanism is studied, and its motive forces are analyzed. It is shown that at currently feasible strain rates the materials fails due to elastic energy. A criterion governing the strain rate with which kinetic energy can be involved in the fracture process is proposed.
