Abstract:
This work focuses on the conditions that inspired the formation of European scientific journals, the creation of general scientific journals including contributions on mathematics, firstly appearances of specialized mathematical journals and, secondly, journals aimed at specific directions of mathematics. An analysis was made on the historical evolution of mathematics in Portugal, its formation of the scientific communities and journals development between the second half of XVIIIth century to the beginning of XXth century. Using as an example the first Portuguese mathematical journal “Jornal de ciencias matematicas e astronómicas”, founded by F. G. Teixeira in 1877, the evolution process from the scientific-informative journal to an international specialized scientific journal publishing original mathematical articles is analyzed. The contribution of this journal to the development of mathematical community in Portugal has been discussed. Internationalization of the relations with the leading European countries was the result of this activity. It is possible to conclude that the journal’s objective of overcoming the scientific isolation of the country was very successful.
