On the accuracy of Monte Carlo simulation of the Coulomb collision integral

S. A. Karpov, I. F. Potapenko

Abstract: In previous works, discrete simulation Monte Carlo for the kinetic equation with nonlinear Coulomb collision operator is considered in detail for the case of a multicomponent plasma. The rigorous estimation of the order approximation of the Landau–Fokker–Planck collision integral by the Boltzmann integral is given. In the present publication the approximation accuracy is investigated numerically. It is shown that the order of approximation is higher than it can be proved analytically. The possibility of the optimal time steps choice is analyzed. The comparison with the analytical formulas in the electron-ion temperature relaxation problem is provided.

Keywords: Coulomb collisions, Boltzmann equation, Monte Carlo method, Landau–Fokker–Planck equation.
