Abstract: This study is devoted to short-term dynamics of establishing of cognitive maps of a novel environment in the hippocampus of freely behaving mice. The average time required for stable spatial neuronal representations to establish was evaluated and spatial selectivity of these cognitive maps was characterized. It was shown how these parameters evolved on further days of the experiment and a population analysis of neuronal activity was performed to verify these results.

Keywords: place cells, place fields, cognitive map, hippocampus.
