Abstract: The comparative analysis of biochemical characters in basic types of automorphic soils formed under various bioclimatic conditions of the Elbrus and Terek variants of vertical zonation within KabardinBalkaria is presented. The authors determined, that the peculiarities of the discussed variants of vertical zonation have a pronounced effect on the soil-covering in the territory under studies, and are manifested in formation and distribution of the studied soil types and in their biological characters.

Keywords: variants of vertical zonation, automorphic soils, enzymatic activity, urease, phosphatase, invertase, catalase, dehydrogenase.
