Abstract: The first reliable observation of emission from a hot gas of free electrons in a metal with a cold lattice is reported. The emission is observed upon the irradiation of the metal with femtosecond laser pulses. The distinctive feature of this emission as compared to the case of equilibrium heating is the dependence of the emission quantum yield on the parameters of the electron-phonon interaction.
