Abstract: It is demonstrated that laser irradiation causes formation of complicated fractal structures (classical dendrites) on a steel surface. The distribution of dendrites over the irradiated region can be controlled using variations in the profile of the incident laser beam. Electron microscopy is used to evaluate the size distributions of dendrites and the surface distribution density.
