Abstract: New 4-methoxy-1,8-naphthalimide derivative containing a salicylideneamino receptor group at the imide nitrogen atom demonstrated selective fluorescent response to Zn2+ cations due to the formation of 1: 2 and 2: 1 ligand–metal complexes.

Keywords: sensor, zinc cation, fluorescence, photoinduced electron transfer (PET), 1,8-naphthalimide, Schiff base, salicylideneamino group.
