Abstract: Intermolecular interactions between humic substances (HSs) and the tricyclic antidepressants (TAs) amitriptyline, nortriptyline, imipramine and desipramine were detected for the first time by fluorescence spectroscopy. Two simplest models assuming coordination of one or two of TA molecules at the binding centers of HSs were proposed to explain the photodegradation of TAs caused by sunlight photolysis of humic substances.
