Abstract: Reaction of dilithiated (S)-1-phenylethanol with benzil affords (1S,3R,4S)-1-methyl-3,4-diphenyl-3,4-dihydro-1H-isochromene-3,4-diol being a cyclic hemiacetal, whose structure was established by X-ray analysis.
