Abstract: The title reaction performed in the DMSO–NaOH system resulted in the formation of 2,3-diphenyl-2,3-(2′-cyanophenyl)butanedioic acid diamide, which was selectively hydrolysed to 2,3-diphenyl-2,3-(2′-cyanophenyl)butanedioic acid.
