Abstract: Propylene has been catalytically oxidized by dioxygen to acrylic acid and/or its esters in high yield (60–80%) in acidified aqueous and/or alcoholic solutions of palladium–561 giant clusters, whereas ethylene has been converted to acetic acid; this is the first example of acid–promoted palladium catalysis of alkene oxidation.
