Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the application of the DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) model for viscous incompressible turbulent flow simulations on unstructured grids. We consider the most commonly used convective flow discretization schemes and calibrate DES model constants for each of the schemes. We apply the DES model to flow simulations on various types of grids, including block-structured, tetrahedral, polyhedral unstructured grids and a grid composed of triangular prisms. We analyze the efficiency of the chosen convective flow discretization as applied to DES simulations and present recommended values of the constants and required characteristics of different types of grids to ensure consistent application of this approach to viscous incompressible turbulent flow simulations.

Keywords: Navier–Stokes equations, Detached Eddy Simulation, discretization schemes of convection term, isotropic turbulence.
