Jump in the Number of Collective Degrees of Freedom as a Phase Transition of the First Kind

Abstract: We define a new property of the spinodal as the curve with maximum Hartley entropy. We give a method for constructing the gas spinodal and isotherms with the help of the second and third virial coefficients. A “gas–amorphous body” phase transition is considered.
