Synthesis, isolation, and X-ray structural characterization of trifluoromethylated $\mathrm{C}_{78}$ fullerenes: $\mathrm{C}_{78}(2)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{10/12}$ and $\mathrm{C}_{78}(3)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{12/14}$

Abstract: Four $\mathrm{CF}_3$ derivatives of $\mathrm{C}_{78}$, $\mathrm{C}_{78}(2)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{10/12}$ and $\mathrm{C}_{78}(3)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{12/14}$, have been isolated via HPLC from the products of high-temperature trifluoromethylation of a $\mathrm{C}_{76}$-$\mathrm{C}_{96}$ fullerene mixture or a $\mathrm{C}_{78}$ fraction. Their molecular structures were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography using synchrotron radiation. The addition patterns of the new compounds are compared with each other and with the previously known C$\mathrm{C}_{78}(2)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{10}$ and $\mathrm{C}_{78}(3)(\mathrm{CF}_3)_{12}$.

Keywords: higher fullerenes, $\mathrm{C}_{78}$, trifluoromethylation, HPLC, structure elucidation.
