Synthesis, isolation, and X-ray structural characterization of trifluoromethylated C$_{90}$ fullerenes: C$_{90}$(30)(CF$_{3}$)$_{18}$ and C$_{90}$(35)(CF$_{3}$)$_{14}$
Abstract:
Two CF$_{3}$ derivatives of C$_{90}$, C$_{90}$(30)(CF$_{3}$)$_{18}$ and C$_{90}$(35)(CF$_{3}$)$_{14}$, have been isolated via HPLC from the products of a high-temperature trifluoromethylation of a C$_{76}$-C$_{96}$ fullerene mixture with CF$_{3}$I. Their molecular structures were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography using synchrotron radiation. The addition patterns of the new compounds are discussed in comparison with those of the corresponding chlorinated C$_{90}$.
