Abstract:
To provide strength and stability of earthfill dams chronologically precise evaluation of emergency flows incoming the reservoir and under such conditions carrying out respective calculations based on allowable limits of an impoundment area is of the ultimate importance. With this end in view, the mechanism of distribution of emergency flows entering the reservoir was considered and the equation of water balance was derived accumulated in the reservoir and discharged through spillway works. The obtained equation is integrated for a particular case when the catastrophic runoff in a definite period of time remains unchanged. The suggested approach will enable to plot chronology of the reservoir level and the value of predicted maximum rise of level depending on time and amount of probable maximum passing flow. The assumed catastrophic retaining level value has been validated by the example of the Geghi reservoir, as well as by the dimensions of existing spillway facilities and the calibration hydrograph of emergency flow.
