Venice and Armenian-Italian early medieval architectural interconnections

Abstract: Armenian-Venetian early medieval cultural relations, the context of the Armenian cultural trail and preserved architectural monuments have been discussed. They are examined in chronological order, with an emphasis on a number of important historical facts, the study of which makes it possible to explain the emergence of Armenian colonies on the Adriatic coast, as well as the results of their activities. As one of the earliest references, the historical “meeting” of Nero and Trdat is considered, reference is made to the historiographic records/evidence preserved on the Basilica of San Marco,the construction activities of the Byzantine exarchs of Armenian descent Nerset and Isaac are mentioned, the construction of the church of St. Zakaria is being investigated. Zakaria in Venice, as a result of the grateful activity of the Byzantine king of Armenian descent Levon the 5th. Thus, the article explores early medieval Armenian-Venetian historical relations, which will form the basis of a more thorough and comprehensive study of further historical and cultural relations between Armenia and the Republic of Venice.
