Abstract: A rigorous theory of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave that is emitted by a point elementary current source and that is focused by a flat layer filled with a substance with a negative refractive index (Veselago lens) is considered. The distributions of the electromagnetic field in the focal region are investigated and the dimensions of the region are determined. The key questions of the theory are discussed in detail.

Keywords: nanofocusing, surface plasmons, optical sensors.
