Abstract: A study was made of laser ignition (1064 nm, 120 $\mu$s) of coals of grades DG, G, G, and K. For all grades of coal, three successive ignition stages were found, characterized by threshold radiation energy densities that have characteristic values for each grade of coal.

Keywords: coal, laser, ignition, volatiles, degree of coalification, coke residue.
