Optical excitation of space-charge waves involving interband transitions in Bi$_{12}$GeO$_{20}$ crystals

Abstract: The excitation of space-charge waves in a semiconductor (Bi$_{12}$GeO$_{20}$) crystal using light with photon energy close to the bandgap width has been studied. The sample crystal has been optically excited by exposure to an oscillating interference pattern. The existing model notions are consistent with the experimental results.
