Abstract: We illustrate the method of similar operators with examples including the preliminary similaritytransformation. The method is applied primarily to operators defined by their matrices. The preliminary similaritytransformation is used, in particular, for operators with non-increasing spectral gaps, such as certain Diracoperators and operators with an involution.

Keywords: method of similar operators, preliminary similarity transformation, operator matrices, spectrum.
