Abstract: Using the methods of physical and colloidal chemistry, capillary effects at the boundaries oil – ice – atmosphere and oil – ice – water are considered and it is shown that in the presence of these effects, the spreading of oil over the ice surface is limited, in contrast to the water surface. Formulas for determining the limiting thicknesses of the oil film are obtained, which can be used to assess the spatial scale of oil pollution of solid ice cover.

Keywords: ice cover, water, atmosphere, oil, spreading, surface tension, modeling, forecasting.
