Abstract: The generation of internal waves by vibrating cylinders with cross sections of various shapes is studied experimentally. It is shown that at large distances from the generator, the profile of the perturbation amplitude of the density gradient can be calculated with satisfactory accuracy using the theory for an equivalent circular cylinder. It is found that at short distances from the generator, its shape has a significant effect on the profile of the generated waves.

Keywords: stratified fluid, internal waves, viscous attenuation, digital schlieren method.
