Abstract: An analysis is made of the problem of determining the ion temperature profile from transit-time data and neutron energy spectra under conditions of an experiment involving laser irradiation of $D-D$ and $D-T$ targets. The conditions required to construct an approximate solution are formulated. Calculations made for model examples show that the ion temperature profile and its maximum can be determined. Real data are processed assuming a constant target density. An approximate expression is given for the neutron energy spectrum using a model which allows for directional motion of the reacting nuclei.
