Abstract:
An estimate is obtained of the maximum output energy obtainable from a unit area of a solid-state laser generating a train of giant pulses. A description is given and the results of tests are reported for a system designed to investigate a neodymium laser generating trains of nanosecond pulses with a repetition frequency up to 20 kHz and an output energy of $\thicksim100$ J . Preliminary experiments on conversion of a packet of highpower pulses into second harmonic radiation are described.
