Abstract: A study is made of the problem of finding the optical characteristics and level populations of H-like ions in an expanding planar plasma layer. An analysis is carried out of the results of recent experiments demonstrating enhanced emission and amplification due to transitions of multiply charged ions. It is shown that the experimentally observed anomalies are not in agreement with the present ideas concerning the conditions for the appearance of inversion and amplification due to the 3–2 transition.
