Abstract:
An analysis is made of the energy characteristics of normal modes in six types of layered dielectric waveguide of circular transverse cross section. Rigorous and approximate expressions are obtained for the longitudinal energy flux, for powers in the various layers of a waveguide, and attenuation coefficients of the normal modes. The volume occupied by a field associated with a given mode is described by an effective diameter of the waveguide cross section through which 99% of the total energy flux is traveling. The energy characteristics of the five lower modes are calculated for a wide range of the waveguide layer parameters. It is shown that a self-filtering waveguide can be constructed.
