Resonance–temperature optical hysteresis in liquid crystals

Abstract: An experimental study was made of an optical hysteresis in an impure nematic–chiral liquid crystal subjected to illumination with visible radiation at room temperature. The results obtained are explained by the influence of resonant impurity absorption and of temperature on the refractive index of a liquid crystal exhibiting a helical structure.
