Abstract: A photonic bandgap fibre with an ytterbium-doped silica glass core is fabricated and investigated. The possibility of implementing single-mode operation of such fibres in a wide spectral range at a large (above 20 μm) mode field diameter makes them promising for fibre lasers and amplifiers. To ensure a high quality of the beam emerging from the fibre, particular attention is paid to increasing the optical homogeneity of the ytterbium-doped core glass.
