Abstract: The role of laser irradiation in the processes of laser desorption/ionisation from silicon surfaces is considered. The basic functions of laser irradiation (chemical activation of the ion emitter surface, laser-induced ionisation of chemical compounds and ion desorption) are established and analysed.
