Abstract: Nonlinear currents slowly varying in time are found in the skin layer of a metal irradiated by short laser pulses. The lowfrequency field generated by the nonlinear currents in metal and vacuum is studied. The spectral composition, energy and shape of the low-frequency radiation pulse are described.

Keywords: femtosecond pulse, nonlinear current, skin layer, terahertz radiation.
