Abstract: Samples of optical fibres with a high germania concentration in the core and reduced additional optical losses caused by doping were fabricated. It is shown that a Raman fibre amplifier operating at the wavelength of 1.3 μm with a gain in excess of 25 dB can be developed on the basis of such fibres. It is estimated that the pump power needed for this amplifier is about 200 mW, which could be provided by a semiconductor InGaAsP\/InP laser emitting at 1.24 μm.
