Abstract: The shaping of the spectral characteristics of the output from a pulsed dye laser during injection of wide-band laser light into its cavity has been studied theoretically and experimentally. It was found experimentally that in the case of a lamp-pumped dye laser with a nonselective cavity the slave laser emits a line spectrum. The frequencies of the peaks lie in regions in which the frequencies of axial modes of the master and slave lasers coincide. Expressions for the efficiency of the initiation process and for the initial phases of the multimode generation are derived in a simple model. This multimode generation develops under the influence of the axial modes of the master laser. These quantities are found as functions of the frequency difference between the nearest modes of the master and slave lasers and the unsaturated gain of the slave laser. The generation of the slave laser develops on the mode nearest the frequency of the initiating light. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions.
