Abstract: The creation of nonclassical states of light in tunnel-coupled optical fibers is analyzed. It is possible to achieve a 40% suppression of quantum (vacuum) fluctuations in one quadrature of the field of a standard cw He–Ne laser with an intensity as low as 1 kW/cm2 (i.e., a power of ~1 mW). The possibility of experimental implementation of this scheme for generating squeezed quantum states is discussed.
