Abstract: Differential equations incorporating self-diffraction have been constructed to describe the recording of a holographic grating by synchronous detection. They have been solved numerically. An experimental study was made of the effect of self-diffraction on the spatial-frequency band of a holographic grating recorded in the ferroelectric Ba2NaNb5O15 and in the sillenite Bi12SiO20. There is a satisfactory correspondence between the theoretical and experimental results. Under otherwise equal conditions, a hologram recorded in the ferroelectric has a spatial-frequency band wider than that in the sillenite.
