Abstract: A method is proposed for multiplexing optical-fiber interference sensors. The method involves autodyne reception of frequency-modulated radiation reflected back to the laser. The response of a He–Ne laser with a linearly varying generation frequency to radiation reflected back from a single-mode fiber is studied. The spectrum of beats caused in the laser radiation by the reflection is shown to be governed by the distribution of reflectors along the fiber. The phases of the spectral components contain information about the phase shift of the reflected optical signal. A hydrophone array with a sensitivity of 30 μrad/Hz1/2 is described. A distributed temperature sensor with a spatial resolution of 1 m is also described.
